Musicien d'origine portoricaine, Tito Puente (Ernesto Antonio Puente Jr) est né à New York, le 20 avril 1923.  Surnommé "El rey del timbal", Tito Puente est passionné de danse et de musique. Il commence la musique à l’âge de 13 ans ; il est alors batteur du Big band de Ramon Olivero. Il fait des études de musique à la « Juilliard School of Music » de New York, où il apprend la composition, l'orchestration et le piano.  Sa carrière commence en 1939 aux côtés du pianiste cubain José Curbelo. Au début des années 40, il joue quelques temps avec Machito avant de partir faire son service militaire. En 1947, il forme « Piccadilly Boys » : le groupe enregistre « Abaniquito, El Timbal » en 1949, et « Babarabatiri » en 1951. Il complète sa formation en jouant du saxophone, des congas, des claves, et du vibraphone.  Tito Puente compose son identité musicale à travers de nombreuses influences : du Jazz avec l’album « Puente Goes Jazz » sorti en 1956, de la bossa nova dans les années 60, et de la salsa avec « Azuquita » et « La India ». Il travaille sur des collaborations ou des expériences musicales avec Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Ray Barretto. « Oye Como Va » est l’un de ses plus grands succès des années 70 ;  elle sera plus tard reprise par Carlos Santana.  Dans les années 90, Tito Puente fonde les « Golden Latin Jazz All-Stars » avec Dave Valentin, Charlie Sepúlveda, Andy González, Ignacio Berroa et d’autres encore.  Immense artiste, Tito Puente se frotte à tous les genres avec beaucoup de talent : Cha-cha-cha, Mambo, Latin Jazz, Pachanga, Boogaloo et Salsa. Il meurt d’une crise cardiaque en 2000 à New York.
